SINGAPORE--Ericsson Singapore (Ericsson) plans to double the initial investment in its research and development unit, Ericsson Cyberlab Singapore, from S$10 million to S$20 million this year, said Ericsson Singapore's newly appointed president Claes Odman.

Started in 1999 with an initial investment of S$5 million and a staff strength of 10 engineers, Cyberlab was initially focused on research on mobile applications and terminals.

However, the next two years will see its focus expand to include commercial mobile applications development, the phone maker said. Towards this end, Odman added that Cyberlab plans to increase its staff strength to 40 within the next two years.

Among other things, the lab will provide developers access to pre-release terminals, technical expertise and business consulting to support the creation, implementation and launch of new wireless services and applications, Ericsson said in a statement.

According to an Ericsson spokesperson, there are currently no plans to roll out similar labs in Asia; however, there are two such labs in the US.

Past projects include the DelphiPad, which was developed together with Singapore's Center for Wireless Communications.
