In addition to i-mode cellphone-based Internet services, cell phone services with higher data capability are expected to be available later this year in Japan and Europe, the report said, without citing sources.
Sharp plans to double cellphone output to 9 million units in fiscal 2001, with most of the increase for exports. Sanyo Electric plans to outsource production in order to make 5.5 million units in fiscal 2001 from 1.6 million in this fiscal year, the paper said.
Toshiba plans to develop new phones with Germany's Siemens AG producing them for sale in Europe, Nikkei English News said. NTT DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile phone company.
