TOKYO--Toyota Motor Corp plans to buy a stake in an unnamed satellite broadcaster in April to expand cellular-based services that let drivers call for roadside assistance or surf the Internet. The world's third-largest automaker will take a 10 percent stake in the new company, which will be capitalized at about ¥2 billion (US$16.4 million), the report said. Other investors include Hitachi Ltd, Toppan Printing Co and Asahi Broadcasting Corp, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, without citing sources.

Toyota is forging ties to telecommunications and broadcast companies to secure service for its Internet commerce sites and offer more in-vehicle safety and information services. In August the company bought a 4 percent stake in Japan Business Television Inc, and it's also the second-biggest shareholder in DDI Corp., better known as KDDI, Japan's No 2 telecom provider. The new broadcaster plans to offer data transmission services as well as news, movie, golf and other specialty television channels, the report said.
