SYDNEY--Australian company Nextgen Networks says it's received the first shipment of specially made wombat-proof fiber optic cable it needs to start laying a planned 8,400 kilometer national wideband network linking major Australian cities.

Wombats are large burrowing Australian marsupials which have been known to attack cables laid in the ground.

Nextgen has taken delivery of a shipment of "TrueWave RS" fiber optic cable supplied by Lucent Technologies, the Australian company said.

The cable has been constructed to suit Australian conditions and resist attack from black soil and native tree roots as well as wombats, according to Nextgen.

Lucent is funding the Nextgen project, along with Deutsche Bank, Macquarie Bank and Leightons Holdings. The planned 8,400km network will run from Brisbane to Perth via Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Nextgen says it plans to offer wholesale customers a range of managed bandwidth and Internet enabling products and services delivered via the cable.
