This comes nearly two years after Lucent and Winstar announced a value-added reseller (VAR) agreement in April 1999. The contract saw Winstar reselling Lucent's enterprise data networking products such as the Cajun Campus solutions, PacketStar Access Concentrators, and other network management products in six US states.
With the new agreement, Lucent will assist Winstar in laying the foundation for the latter's international wireless broadband network in Asia, both companies said in a statement released at ITU Asia Telecom 2000 today. Lucent will also provide network design, integration and build-out services.
"Winstar is setting new parameters for the way businesses in Asia can receive and use broadband services, and Lucent is very excited about being part of this process.
"The complete Winstar-Lucent network solution also showcases the breadth of Lucent's product lines, the value of our Bell Labs innovations, and our proven expertise in helping customers design, build and enhance their networks," said Lucent vice president for InterNetworking and Switching Solutions Group (Asia Pacific) David Spear in the statement.
"Together with Lucent, we are positioned to become the first independent carrier to create a global end-to-end broadband network spanning a hundred world markets. Asia is a vital region in that network," said Winstar senior vice president and managing director for Asia Pacific Gary Jaeckel.
ITU Asia Telecom 2000 is the International Telecommunications Union's 23rd telecommunications showing since its 1971 debut in Geneva. The six-day fair, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre this year, is expected to see at least 50,000 visitors, including government officials and industry leaders, from over 50 countries.
