KUALA LUMPUR--Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Malaysia's largest phone company, has begun a study to buy part of the business of Jaring, the country's oldest provider of Internet access service, the Malaysian Business Times reported, citing unnamed sources.

Telekom is interested in buying the part of Jaring's operations that sell Internet access to home users. Jaring, owned by Mimos Bhd, the government's information technology research arm, would then keep the part of its business that targets corporate customers.

Jaring currently has about 800,000 home and business subscribers. Its customer base has grown more than 50 percent a year, the paper said.

Telekom, which owns Internet access provider TMNet, plans to reorganize its business into separate fixed-line, cellular and multimedia units to better compete with rivals such as Maxis Communications Bhd.
