SINGAPORE--The number of Internet home users here who visited online shopping Web sites increased from September to December last year, according to a Nielsen//NetRatings report.

The report claimed that Singapore recorded a growth in Web traffic of 31 percent from September to December, the highest in Asia Pacific (excluding Japan). The findings were based on a sample size of 15,000 to 20,000 Internet users on the island.

When contacted today, ACNielsen eRatings.com Global Analytical Services spokesman Brian Milnes said that there were 86,000 unique visitors for online shopping sites from Singapore last December compared with about 65,649 last September.

Eight sites were tracked during the last quarter of 2000, which included hallmark.com, amazon.com, buy.com, yourmobile.com and freeshop.com, he noted.

"It is thought much of the growth in Singapore can be attributed to visitors to e-greeting card sites, with the majority of growth in that market taking place in December," Milnes observed in a statement.

"Indeed, Web audiences to greeting card sites surged across the (Asia Pacific) region (excluding Japan), pushing these sites to the top of the list of the fastest growers," he claimed.

He added that the findings for Asia Pacific, which was conducted in early January, covered Hong Kong, Australia, News Zealand and Singapore.

To a question, he was unable to provide figures for online spending from Singapore and Asia Pacific users during September to December.

The sample size for the report in Hong Kong was 30,000, 40,000 to 50,000 in Australia and 12,000 to 15,000 in New Zealand, Milnes said.

The report noted that e-shopping visitor levels rose 10.7 percent in Australia, 8.5 percent in New Zealand and 4.4 percent in Hong Kong during the last quarter of 2000.

The findings are part of its new Global Analytical Services, which provide analysis to Nielsen//NetRatings Internet audience measurement data, the company said.
