Tom.com, China Netcom to form ISP JV

HONG KONG--Tom.com, a Web site owned by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, and China Netcom Corp, China's third-largest telecommunications company, said they will form a venture to offer Internet access in China.

Tomnet will offer dial-up access to the Web in Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Wuhuan, and 13 other cities in China, Tom.com said in a statement.

China Netcom will provide the technology for the services, while Tom.com will handle the marketing. Tom.com didn't give financial details of the venture.

"We are creating new revenue sources," Tom.com CEO Wang Sing said.

Tom.com said last month it formed a US$10 million joint venture with ChinaTimes.com, a unit of Taiwan's largest newspaper publisher, to offer interactive marketing services in China.
