A third generation (3G) cellular standard, w-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access) is capable of supporting multimedia messaging and video conferencing applications.
In a statement, Nokia said it has begun supplying Chunghwa with 3G radio access network equipment and services including network planning, project management, installation, commissioning and multi-vendor network integration. The deal comes on the back of a recently completed 3G trial in northern Taiwan.
Nokia's technology has also been central to Chunghwa's general packet radio service (GPRS), multimedia message service (MMS) and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) implementations over the past three years.
State-owned Chunghwa has 7.3 million cellular subscribers, or a 32 percent market share, making it the largest mobile operator in Taiwan.
Last week, Nokia announced a similar win from Japanese mobile carrier J-Phone.
