In a statement released today, the telco said it added a record 5 million mobile users in the quarter ending June 30. With the addition, SingTel, its Australian joint venture SingTel Optus and the company's four regional associates now have a combined mobile subscriber base of over 52 million across six countries in Asia-Pacific. This marks a 40 percent increase from last year, the firm said.
The surge was a largely a result of strong performance outside Singapore. In the island-state, SingTel's user base remained constant at 1.5 million.
Although Australia also has a high mobile penetration of around 80 percent, SingTel Optus said it added 168,000 customers in the last quarter, a 17 percent hike from the previous year.
Telkomsel, SingTel's Indonesian unit, was the largest earnings contributor among its four regional business operations, it added. The combined mobile subscriber base of Telkomsel, Bharti in India, Thailand's Advanced Info Service and Philippine's Globe grew 45 percent last year to reach 45 million.
