Under a pact sealed earlier this week at an ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia will now "recognize each other's testing and certification processes", the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said in a statement.
This means telecommunications gear to be imported into Singapore and Malaysia can be tested in any laboratory recognized by the two countries. Previously, such tests will usually have to be repeated for each country to ensure the equipment conforms to local standards.
With the agreement, telecommunications gear makers can expect to cut costs and reduce duplication in testing processes when selling their products to Singapore or Malaysia, IDA said,
Singapore has already signed similar pacts with Brunei and Indonesia. Other ASEAN nations like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand are expected to take part in such agreements by next year
