Under the agreement, Ericsson will operate Maxis' 3G network--based on the Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) standard--for 18 months, after which the role will be transferred back to the mobile operator.
During the term of this contract, Ericsson will be responsible for areas like training, as well as developing network service level agreements and performance benchmarks.
While the value of this deal was undisclosed, Maxis and Telekom Malaysia, which have both been awarded 3G licenses, have committed to investing RM7.8 billion (US$1.9 billion) over the next 10 years to roll out high-speed mobile services in Malaysia.
According to Maxis' chief operating officer Edward Ying, the firm will launch its 3G offerings by the second half of this year.
"We are working towards achieving a smooth launch and ensuring that our customers experience the marked superiority of 3G services", Ying explained, adding that Ericsson was chosen for its track record in deploying and managing 3G networks.
This is the second outsourcing deal Ericsson has clinched with Maxis. The first being a contract to manage the operator's myMaxis portal for downloading music, polyphonic ring tones, mobile karaoke, video clips, and artist news.
