Intel has invested US$10 million in United Kingdom chip design company Mirics Semiconductor.

Mirics, based in Hampshire, has developed radio-frequency chips that allow mobiles and PCs to receive content based on any number of technical standards being used globally.

Intel will give the fledgling company management and technical advice, as well as introduce Mirics to potential investors.

Simon Atkinson, CEO and founder of Mirics Semiconductor said there is a huge global interest in addressing the technological challenges facing mobile broadcast and the company needs to be able to get its product to market, particularly in Asia Pacific countries.

Intel has been pouring cash into chip-making facilities of late, including a plant in China and a US$300 million chip-testing factory in Vietnam.

Gemma Simpson of Silicon.com reported from London.
