SingTel launches location-based search

SINGAPORE--SingTel has launched a new service that will allow customers to search for information on their mobile phones, based on their current location.

Called *MAPS, the service detects the subscriber's location via SingTel's cellular network and relays the information back to the carrier to provide location-based information such as available services, events and promotions.

To use the service, customers will need a device that supports GPRS (general packet radio service) or WiFi.

They can then key in *MAPS (*6277), which will lead them to a Web page with a map showing their current location. The service is free but connections via SingTel's GPRS and 3.5G network, will incur the operator's regular data charges.

SingTel added that the service will also be available, within this month, on its Wireless@SG portal--accessible via WiFi-enabled devices.
