Singapore continues to set its sights on a high-tech future, and this year has been one marked by big-ticket infocomm technology purchases for the country.
One of the latest buzzwords the government has used to describe this IT landscape is "digital abundance".
|
Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) has highlighted the pieces to make this "abundance" a reality--high-performance computing, unlimited bandwidth and on-demand services riding on this architecture.
Toward that goal, the industry regulator has dedicated a generous budget to making the pieces come together.
The IDA announced last month it intends to direct S$1.14 billion (US$815 million) over the next 12 months to funding new ICT (information and communications technology) projects.
According to the IDA, 391 tenders will be called for in financial year 2008, ending in March 2009, of which 42 percent will be worth at least S$500,000 (US$357,000).
The new budget also includes a S$250 million (US$178 million) grant for the yet-to-be appointed operating company for the planned next-generation National Broadband Network.
The government is also planning to build a new data center aimed at resilience at an estimated S$100 million (US$72 million), to supplement the existing data center--commissioned in 2001--which the IDA said is reaching full capacity.
Another government agency intending to spend on IT is the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), which intends to refresh tax administration hardware and software, as well as take out a lease on data center services.
Identity management is high on the list as well, with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) looking to implement such systems in the next year.
As the country celebrates its National Day 2008, we look back on the achievements etching Singapore's ICT landscape, as the island-state builds and connects the pieces of its "digital abundance".
