APCN2 cable cut cripples connections

update A cut in the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) undersea submarine cable crippled connection speeds for users in the Asia-Pacific region on Wednesday, particularly in Singapore and the Philippines.

Users were sending updates to local forums and Twitter, complaining of slow connection speeds to sites hosted outside of the region.

According to a notice sent by Malaysian telco, TM Net, the cable fault was traced to segment 7 of the APCN2, which stretches between Shantou, China and Tanshui, Taiwan. TM Net traced the outage to Typhoon Morakot, which hit the region over the weekend.

Additionally, segment 1 of the APCN2 is also currently under repair. Repairs on segment 7 are expected to commence after work on segment 1 is completed.

TM Net said the repairs are expected to be completed by late evening Aug. 13.

Singapore operator, SingTel, confirmed the cable fault in an e-mail to ZDNet Asia, saying the APCN2's consortium members have started restoration works and are diverting Internet traffic to other cable systems. It said the situation is expected to return to "acceptable levels" within the next 24 hours.

A status update posted on InternetTrafficReport.com showed SingTel's Singapore gateway registered a score of only 34 points, compared to the global average "health" of network connections, which was 86 points as at 3pm Singapore time on Wednesday.

The site first started registering slower response times and packet loss in Singapore at 8pm Tuesday evening.

Cable & Wireless sent ZDNet Asia a status update at 6pm, Singapore time, noting multiple cable breaks have been also detected along the EAC (East Asia Crossing) and SMW 3 (South-East-Asia, Middle-East, Western-Europe) subsea cable networks, in addition to the APCN2.

These breaks have been concentrated specifically near Taiwan, with network traffic "adversely affected in and out of the region as a result," said the operator.

Back in 2006, the APCN2 was taken out by a powerful earthquake in Taiwan. Internet access was reportedly badly disrupted and halted in some parts of Asia after the quake.

RE: APCN2 cable cut cripples connections
Thanatos10, all of APCN2, Singapore and Taiwan share the same time zone with the Philippines. August 13 should still be August 13 for you.

APCN2 cable cut cripples connections
talagang makikita mo dito kung sino ang mga tanga...
1) singapore, taiwan and philippines ay magkakalapit lang-so ang time zone ay roughly the same.

Your so pathetic. -- " not everybody knows that the time zone in taiwan, singapore and philippines are all the same, it will be much better if you inform a person nicely. :)" -- WOW! Inform a Person nicely? you even insulted him. You are so dumb. You can't even tell what "Nice" REALLY is. I hope that you'll learn how to read. "Perfectionist" is an ass word. RE: APCN2 cable cut cripples connections
One fiber cut to APCN2 (Asia Pacific Cable Network) has been repaired. This was the cut running between Singapore and Malaysia. It was repaired last night (Saturday morning Singapore time). .. The other cut in APCN2, near Taiwan has yet to be repaired, but a crew has been dispatched. ... Other cables affected: APCN(1), status not known ... SWM-3 (August 9th cut) has probably been repaired by now. .. EAC cable (East Asia Crossing) was cut, but I just read that Globe has rerouted traffic to EAC, so EAC must have been repaired. .. C2C Cable Network cut has yet to be repaired. ... FLAG (Fiber Optic Link Around the Globe) has reported a cut in the FNAL (North Asia Route), but thus far no report of repairs. ... Repairs take time, and weather must be good. The crews can work in light rain, but high waves hamper repair time. ... According to Chunghwa Telecom, the total repairs to all cables may take as long as one to two months. .... There is a massive amount of rerouting going on right now. It seems with the repair of the Singapore to Malaysia link in APCN2, I am now able to more reliably call southeast Asia. Prior to this repair, when calling the Philippines, I was only occasionally able to make it through, and that was on Smart. Globe and PLDT were useless. Now I can reliably make calls to PLDT, and Globe and Smart are better as well. ... There will remain a lot of congestion until further repairs are made. ... Just talked to a PLDTmyDSL subscriber and they are now getting speeds near their plan (Experience), but find things such as youtube still buffering. Pings are okay, with no packet loss, just plain congestion. .. Hang in there folks.
