Nokia faces US$232M bill after patent defeat

Nokia must pay more than US$230m to InterDigital, a US-based wireless technology firm, after losing the latest stage in a long-running legal battle over patent royalties. InterDigital announced on Wednesday that a federal district court judge in New York had upheld an earlier ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce's Court of Arbitration. It had ruled that Nokia owed InterDigital over US$230 million in royalty payments. The case relates to technology used by Nokia in its 2G and 2.5G mobile phones, which InterDigital – which receives most of its revenue from royalty payments – says are covered by its intellectual property. Nokia had asked the New York court to overturn this ruling. Having lost this claim, Nokia has said it will negotiate with InterDigital about the size of the payment, according to reports. |
