Palm admitted recently a Linux-based version of its operating system will not be available until 2008.

This is a slip from earlier expectations that the software would be out later this year.

Palm announced in April that it was developing its own Linux-based version of the Palm OS despite a similar project from Access, the company formerly known as Palmsource.

The company wants to migrate Garnet OS--the name for Palm's operating system--to a Linux core while maintaining support for older Palm OS applications. But according to Palm, the project will take longer than expected.

It means that Palm will continue to compete against Apple's iPhone and other challengers with Garnet OS, which hasn't been updated in years.
