AUCKLAND--The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in New Zealand brought together leaders of the Pacific Rim nations to make resolutions regarding the final stages of regional Y2K planning.
With just over 100 days to go, the APEC member countries resolved to strengthen cooperation and improve regional Y2K preparations across borders. Efforts will be centered on information sharing, public disclosure initiatives and confidence building measures.
Ministers agreed on the importance of planning for potential disruption, especially in critical sectors like electricity, maritime shipping and health. APEC economies will also give priority to strengthening global arrangements for emergency response to any Y2K-related failures.
The member countries will hold regional workshops in the coming months to coordinate their contingency planning programs. These will be held in Thailand in September, Peru in October and Korea in November. A further meeting in Tokyo from September 27 to 28 will promote an exchange of knowledge and information in the energy sector.
APEC was attended by Ministers from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Republic of the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States of America and Vietnam.
