BRISBANE--Between A$12 billion and A$15 billion (US$7.71 billion and US$9.63 billion) spent on Y2K planning and repairs by the Australian Government and industry has been a valuable investment, according to Senator Ian Campbell, parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Communications and IT.

Campbell, speaking at a Y2K infrastructure forum in Brisbane today, said that the work went a long way in securing Australia's attractiveness as both a blue-chip investment destination and as a tourist destination. According to Campbell, on Monday the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) named Australia and Finland as the safest destinations in the world for tourists.

"These efforts have provided numerous lessons that will translate well in Australia's emerging digital economy in the years beyond 2000," he said of the string of industry Y2K forums held over the last year.

"Those lessons learned will contribute to Australia's economic strength and its attractiveness as a business hub," he added. "I consider the A$12 billion to A$15 billion and massive management effort spent on Y2K projects to be an important investment."
