SINGAPORE--Internet users in Singapore have been experiencing a massive network outage since early this afternoon.
From about 1.30pm, reports started coming in about users being unable to access Internet sites outside Singapore. People have been able to check their email but not to surf to Web sites outside Singapore. Full service is slowly being restored, but work has yet to be completed.
According to preliminary reports, Singnet dialup and leased line users were the most badly affected. Pacific Internet dialup users experienced no problems though the company's leased line customers did.
A SingTel spokesman said the company was still trying to locate the source of the problem. Sources say there is a major fault in SingTel's telecommunication link between Taiwan and Japan. It is unclear if this is related to the major earthquake in Taiwan earlier this morning.
The earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter Scale and struck Taiwan at about 1.45am. More than 1,000 people have been killed and authorities have issued a tsunami alert.
More to come.
