Baltimore Technologies beats rivals into Asia

HONG KONG--Baltimore Technologies, a British-based supplier of PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) solutions provider has opened its North Asia headquarters in Hong Kong, beating their competitors to become the first PKI company with a direct presence here.

The company provides solutions for both independent certification authorities (CAs) and companies involved in electronic commerce.

Aidan Gallagher, Baltimore's chief operating officer and executive vice president said they were finding it was important to have a global presence, so as to service their larger customers. He said: "We have to be in a position to offer the same level of service to companies worldwide."

At present, none of Baltimore's main competitors, which includes companies like Verisign, RSA Security and Entrust Technologies have a direct presence in Asia. Gallagher speculated this was because they were too focused on the North American market.

On the other hand, he said Baltimore believed Asia was a huge business area, and that as companies here began to move into the Internet more, they would want PKI products.

Alternatively, Baltimore is also working with other technology companies to embed their PKI technology into other products. According to Gallagher, they are probably the only security firm doing this.

Consequently, he said they wanted to have an Asian presence, to allow them to work with Asian technology firms, especially those working with emerging technologies.
