HONG KONG--Computer crime is on the rise according to Hong Kong police statistics. And as a result, the force is having to beef up its ability to combat cyber crime.

So far this year, 228 cyber crime cases have been reported, up from 34 reported cases in the whole of last year.

According to Lo Yik-kee, Chief Superintendent of the Police's Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) of the 228 cases, 160 involved hacking, 31 dealt with publication of obscene articles, four related to criminal damage in relation to data and 14 involved Internet shopping fraud.

Lo blamed the tremendous growth of technology and the rapid expansion in the use of Internet, for providing opportunities for criminals.

He revealed that in an effort to combat this growing trend, the Police were developing new investigation skills, exchanging information with overseas law enforcement agencies and liaizing with local information technology professionals.

He said: "As part of the Force's efforts to broaden its capability, a Computer Crime Investigation Cadre (CCIC) will start to function next month."

The CCIC will provide support services to front-line operational units at District levels. With Cadre members professionally trained to handle computer-related crime investigations that often involve the collection of electronic data as evidence.
