Qwest and BellSouth agreed to coordinate their marketing efforts when they announced the transaction in April. They said they now have more than 250 proposals pending with governments and retail, financial and health-care companies, in addition to the new contracts.
The contracts cover new networks that will carry voice, data and video communications and provide Internet connections throughout the southeast and the United States. Qwest just finished building its 18,500-mile national fiber-optic network and recently announced plans to expand into Canada.
Qwest and BellSouth also said they will bolster their capabilities by combining Qwest's Web-based billing and support systems with BellSouth's customer-service staff and operations at a new customer resource center.
Denver-based Qwest agreed to merge with US West in a $45.2 billion transaction in July.
