Declining to reveal financial figures, Sun Singapore managing director Wong Heng Chew said sales growth would be better than last year's (ended June, 1999) rate of about 20 percent.
"Singapore contributes very significantly to the company's Asia South business," he added, without providing specifics.
In addition, Lionel Lim, Sun Asia South vice president and managing director, said the company is "on target" to grow its (Asia South) sales by 40 percent this fiscal year. Growth was about 30 percent last year.
Sun's Asia South market includes Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
Prior to Wong's appointment, the local operations was handled by Lim Chin Hu, who has since been promoted as Asia Pacific channels director.
Wong, who just joined Sun four weeks ago, was the managing director of Compaq Singapore.
"What attracted me to Sun is its focus on technologies and programs for the Internet economy such as Java and Jini, and its Java Tarik incubator program for Net start-ups," said Wong. "Sun is more focused than all the other vendors."
A 16-year veteran in the IT industry, Wong said that he left Compaq Singapore last December for "personal reasons".
While at Compaq Singapore, he was responsible for organising its local operations and undertook the task of integrating the local Compaq and Tandem sales teams when Compaq acquired Tandem.
Before Compaq, Wong held key management positions at Motorola and Hewlett-Packard.
Coincidentally, about a month after Wong left Compaq Singapore, Compaq Computer Malaysia managing director Cheam Tat-Inn also resigned from the company to join Silicon Valley-based start-up, Arcadian Wireless Inc.
