At a press conference after a launching ceremony of PAL@McDonald's kiosk at McDonald's Uptown five outlets in Damansara Utama here today, he said the kiosks were alternative delivery channels that complemented 30 of its nationwide conventional branches.
The partnership between the bank and the fast-food operator was aimed at merging banking and investing into the lifestyles of the Malaysian people, he added.
PAL@McDonald's would enable banking customers to transact via its various banking products, namely Paldirect, Palworld, PalPoint (ATM) and PalPhone.
Paldirect is the country's first on-line banking and investing service while Palworld is the first comprehensive family-oriented online service that allows customers to bank, invest, shop and make travel arrangements remotely.
Pal Point provides ATM transactions and PalPhone offers banking services via the phone line.
The first electronic banking kiosk was at the Mines Shopping Fair in June 1997 followed by another two in Bangsar Baru and 1 Utama Shopping Centre in the first half of 1998.
This year, PAL made available another kiosk in Kota Bharu prior to the one in PAL@McDonald's Uptown 5. Tong also said that the kiosks were Internet-enabled and would be open to the Internet environment when the authorities approve Internet banking in June, 2000.
He said at the moment, the kiosks were running on an Intranet-based environment as Internet banking had not been approved yet for implementation.
At the same press conference, McDonalds' Malaysia managing director, Mohamed Shah Abdul Kadir said McDonald planned to set up another 14 to 15 more outlets this year with half drive-throughs.
McDonald is the largest chain of quick service restaurants in the world with more than 25,000 restaurants in 117 countries while in Malaysia, McDonald opened 131 restaurants to date.
