One of the new monochrome laser printers for the general office market, the Optra M412, is comparable to HP's LaserJet 4050, the company said. The Lexmark printer will cost US$799, about US$300 less. Both print 17 pages a minute.
Lexmark accounted for about 8 percent of monochrome laser printer sales in the first quarter, according to International Data Corp. HP had a 76 percent share of the market in that period, when 709,500 monochrome printers were sold. NEC had close to 5 percent, while Xerox had 1.7 percent, IDC said.
"They're the only vendor so far that's been able to put a dent in HP's market share," said Weili Su, an analyst with IDC.
Prices of the new Lexmark printers range from US$179 to US$1,929. Comparable printers from Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP cost from US$199 to US$2,899, Lexmark said.
