KUALA LUMPUR--EPNCR (M) Sdn Bhd, a Multimedia Super Corridor(MSC)-status company, yesterday soft launched the first Malaysian-developed mobile smartcard reader.

EPNCR was awarded by the Malaysian government the contract to develop a portable card acceptance device together with its on-board applications for the Malaysian Government Multi-Purpose Card Project (GMPC), one of the flagship applications of the Multimedia Super Corridor.

Speaking to reporters after the launch Monday, EPNCR chief executive officer, Khairun Zainal Mokhtar, said the company expects to deliver 6,000 units of the smartcard reader to the government by the third quarter of 2000 for its GMPC project.

He said the company took 15 months to develop the mobile smart card reader with the help of its alliances, MIMOS, SIRIM and Cadance of San Jose, California.

The smartcard reader is to be used for the new national identity smartcard under the GMPC which is expected to be issued to over two million citizens by 2001.

Stored on the smartcard's microchip will be the complete information of the holder, ranging from the fingerprint, driving license and personal health data with the potential to be developed as an e-cash card.

While the smartcard was developed for the GMPC, EPNCR is looking into designing the product for other commercial uses.

EPNCR was incorporated as a joint-venture company of NCR (M) Sdn Bhd which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NCR Corporation, USA.
