If their non-WAP phones are GSM 2+ phones and installed with a microbrowser in the SIM cards that are SIM Toolkit (STK)-compliant, they can be used to access such services.
DiGi Telecom recently tied up with Swedish wireless Internet specialist Across Wireless to offer the solution using the latter's Wireless Internet Gateway (WIG) which supports both STK on GSM 2+ and WAP phones.
"DiGi customers like most people in Malaysia, are currently using GSM 2+ phones. This solution frees them up from having to invest in a new WAP-enabled phone which is at the moment costly and does not have point-to-point security," said DiGi chief operating officer Stein Hansen.
"All an existing non-WAP mobile phone user has to do is change the SIM card at any one of DiGi's service centers or dealers nationwide," said Hansen.
DiGi is also giving the STK-compliant 32k SIM card free to those who sign up for the DiGi Mobile Banking Service during the 12-month promotional period which began last month.
Hansen said communication is carried out via short message service (SMS) between the wireless markup language (WML) browser installed in the SIM card and UOB banking applications.
DiGi is also using the Across Wireless WIG platform to offer other services within its Information on Demand (IOD) framework such as receiving information on top hits from MTV, booking of cinema tickets through Cinema Online and entering contests at a dedicated Web portal contestOnly.com.
Hansen said DiGi plans to roll out more interactive lifestyle services soon.
Apart from WIG and the SIM-based WAP browser, Across Wireless--a member of the Sonera SmartTrust Group--offers wireless Internet-based service platforms such as "over the air" (OTA) service and device management.
Sonera SmartTrust is a developer and provider of PKI-based security solutions for wireless e-commerce.
