"The lion's share of this exponential growth will come from IT development and integration services," Gartner told AFP, forecasting that the segment would hit US$21.1 billion in four years.
India’s entire domestic IT services market is currently estimated at US$5.5 billion, the US-based technology consultant said. The survey, released in New Delhi, added that computer education would emerge as the second biggest revenue generator for the IT industry, accounting for US$2.1 billion of the services pie in 2004, compared with US$600 million in calendar 2000.
Gartner also said the software maintenance segment would clock a 16 per cent growth rate from US$400 million in 2000 to US$900 million in 2004.
On the hardware front, the market is poised to expand to US$220 million over the next four years, up 10 per cent per year from US$150 million this year.
Gartner itself is hoping to expand its customer base in India, according to Partha Iyengar, head of Gartner’s Indian office. The firm currently has about 100 large customers, but hopes to have 1,000 customers for its services in a year’s time. Gartner's revenues from India last year were worth US$4 million.
