Sources said excessive traffic into the Web site caused its server in the United States to be shutdown.
"Our Web host informed us that its server is unable to handle the heavy traffic flow and we are in the process of moving the Web site elsewhere," the spokesman said adding the new development was unavoidable but only temporary.
These comments put to rest earlier speculation that the site was hacked into by outsiders or even barred by the government.
Since Malaysiakini came online late last year, it has garnered a lot of interest among interested observers of the local political scene. The site was launched on a RM380,000 capital channelled by the Southeast Asian Press Alliance comprising associations of Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
One of its founders, Steven Gan was also reported to have commented that the site has gotten an increasing number of visitors as the mainstream media had lost its credibility.
Before its temporary shutdown, Malaysiakini was garnering more than 100,000 hits per day.
