"Now we don't have to necessarily take our bandwidth from our competitor, and at the same time we have control over our bandwidth quality and predictability of throughput," Mantra's chief Atul Kanwar said.
Until now, private Internet service providers (ISPs) have had to route their access to international gateways through state-run VSNL, which monopolised international telecommunication services, AFP reported.
Mantra Online's Internet gateway has been set up in the Indian capital of New Delhi on a KU-band frequency, enabling the firm to bypass state-run VSNL's busy gateway in the city.
Mantra Online, a joint venture between British Telecom and India's Bharti Enterprises, said it plans to open seven more gateways.
Private ISPs have complained data flow through VSNL's gateway is slow and erratic, with frequent breakdowns. They also say VSNL's gateway monopoly hampers their ability to compete with it in other fields. VSNL itself still commands a 60 percent share of the domestic ISP market.
