KUALA LUMPUR--First Solution Sdn Bhd and CyberTouch Sdn Bhd have joined forces to offer small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia a "more affordable" means to jumpstart their e-commerce initiatives using the IBM RS/6000 platform.

The companies have bundled solution packages that combine the IBM server with iPlanet E-commerce Solutions, aimed at fulfilling the corporate communication and messaging needs of SMEs.

First Solution, a subsidiary of Formis (Malaysia) Bhd is the distributor for IBM RS/6000 while CyberTouch distributes and provides training for iPlanet Sulutions.

Though the solutions are said to be "very affordable", the standard packages do not however, include any e-commerce transaction capabilities.

Instead, CyberTouch which specializes in e-consulting services, will offer its expertise in strategies, branding and business practices to customers who purchase the bundles and require additional services in implementing their e-commerce strategies.

"Depending on what their business strategies will be, say implementing a portal or an exchange, our consultants will tailor the solutions to meet their needs," CyberTouch chief operating officer Amanda Tsing said during the introduction of the bundles yesterday.

But any implementation, training, consultation and other additional services will cost extra to customers who purchase either of the two IBM RS/6000-iPlanet bundles--Callisto and Antheus.

Both packages come standard with an IBM RS/6000 44P Model 170 server and iPlanet E-commerce Solutions comprising messaging server, Web server, calendar server, collabra server, directory server and mission control desktop.

Callisto for 50 users and an IBM RS/6000 server with 256MB ECC SDRAM is priced at RM72,470. Antheus costs RM120,590 for 150 users and the server with 512MB ECC SDRAM.

First Solution and CyberTouch are currently offering a promotional price of RM43,500 for Callisto and RM69,600 for Antheus. The promotion runs till November 15 during which time the companies target between 50 and 100 customers.

While the companies admit the market is not short of similar offerings, they believe customers will be attracted to the IBM-iPlanet bundles as they represent the "marriage" of two best-of-breed technologies at affordable prices.

IBM's RS/6000 systems are recognized for their robustness, availability as well as price/performance with more than 1 million units shipped to over 150,000 commercial and technical customers worldwide.

iPlanet E-commerce Solutions was established in March last year by America Online Inc (AOL) and Sun Microsystems to power up enterprises for the Internet economy through thought leadership, technical innovation, expert services and the creation of exceptional customer satisfaction.
