HYDERABAD--Floods forced workers at Indian technology companies in the southern city of Hyderabad such as Satyam Computer Services to stay home Friday.

Heavy rain caused floods throughout Andhra Pradesh. A total of 65 people were confirmed dead, while five were missing and 1,440 homes were damaged, said N. Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Rainfall is expected to continue for the next 36 hours, he said.

Satyam Computer Services, India's fourth-biggest software exporter, declared a holiday.

"It's been raining continuously for the past two days, and all access roads are flooded," said S.V.L. Narayan, head of corporate communications at Satyam. "We will work on Saturday to compensate for the day's loss."

The availability of skilled manpower, access to telecommunication facilities and local government initiatives have made Hyderabad a favored destination for software and technology companies.

These include Oracle Software India, the Indian unit of the world's No. 1 database software maker, and VisualSoft Technologies. Both companies said few of its employees turned up for work.

The Andhra Pradesh government has asked all schools and colleges to close.
