KUALA LUMPUR--Leading enterprise computing software developer, Computer Associates (CA) Malaysia yesterday released the Windows 2000 version of its data protection and management solution ARCServe 2000.

Designed to have the capability to scale up in the Internet environment, ARCServe 2000 is said to feature online backup of applications and data files, seamless disaster recovery, serverless backup and support Fibre Channel SAN (Storage Area Networks).

It is also integrated with virus detection, scanning and cure using CA's InoculateIT virus scanning engine, Web style GUI, centralized management of storage-related tasks, Active Directory and COM+ database protection and active clustering report.

Some enhanced features include cross platform Open File protection, and backup agents for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Informix, Sybase, R/3, Ingres II, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange Server.

On the client side, ARCServe 2000 comes with client agents for Unix (Sun, HP, IBM, SCO, Unixware, SGI), Linux, Netware, OS/2, Macintosh, Win3x, Win9x.

ARCServe is claimed to have the capability to manage data and enable realtime data sharing which the traditional 10/100 Mb Ethernet networks via SCSI connection had not been capable of handling.

"E-businesses today are fundamentally driven by data and IT dependent. With more businesses going online, data in e-business is increasing dynamically, thus the need to protect and manage data becomes increasingly important as well," said John Yang, assistant VP, Asean & India, Channel Sales Computer Associates.

While the industry is evolving between SAN and NAS (Network Attached Storage), Yang believes the upcoming prevalent network infrastructure at the backend will be SCSI over IP networks, which will allow 1Gb speed throughput.

"Traditionally, data volume grew about 60 percent a year. Now, with the proliferation of e-businesses, companies are experiencing data growth of 3 to 4Gb every three months. As such, it is becoming more and more critical for businesses to protect their data," KC Liew, sales manager, Channel Sales Division, Computer Associates (M) Sdn Bhd said.

There are two editions to ARCServe 2000, the Workgroup which targets the SMIs and SMEs and the Advanced version targeted at enterprises with WAN infrastructure.

Suggested retail price for ARCServe starts at RM2,500 and scales up depending on the add-on modules/agents required.

CA distributors in Malaysia are FirstTech Pacific, Jardine One Solutions, Servex and JR Systems. Yang said these four channels are delivering close to 1,000 ARCServe products (previous version) per month and expects equal uptake of the new ARCServe 2000.
