On Friday, state-owned China Mobile--China's largest mobile network operator--appointed telecommunications equipment giant Ericsson to supply equipment for the network.
The contract speeds up work toward a planned October completion date.
When launched, the IP backbone will provide voice-over IP services for China Mobile, then will be used as the basis for the company's GPRS system, and also deliver IP backbone network services to carriers and large corporations, and their customers, across China.
Ericsson says the project is the largest IP backbone network it has been involved with. It will provide IP routers for the network's nodes.
China Mobile has over 50 million mobile subscribers in China.
