KUALA LUMPUR--Motorola Malaysia will on Monday seal a US$2 million (RM7.6 million) contract with Siemens Malaysia to build the radio communications system for the country's Express Rail Link (ERL) project which links KL Sentral and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

It will be the first such system built using the TETRA (terrestrial trunk radio) architecture platform, a new open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) which is the same body that defined GSM (global systems for mobile communications).

The key capability of the TETRA technology is the provision of integrated dispatch, data and telephony service on a single integrated platform, said Zaidon Omar Baki, commercial, government & industrial solutions sector (CGISS) national manager, Motorola Malaysia.

"TETRA is specifically designed and optimized for public and private safety networks. It will provide efficient and effective communications as well as better coordination and monitoring of passenger train feeds in the ERL, once it is in place," he said in an exclusive interview with Malaysia.CNET.com.

In comparison with analog systems, the key advantage of TETRA--being a digital system--over analog systems, is in the quality of signals, Zaidon added.

"For digital, the signal basically goes a long way but if it's bad it drops off. Whereas for analog, when the signal gets bad, it will not drop off but go on, becoming noisier and have more interruptions."

The system is scheduled to go live by end next year, Zaidon added. "Currently, we are at the very key stage of planning and actually designing the entire system. The complexity lies in integrating this radio communications system with the other systems under the entire ERL project such as signaling, operations, ticketing and display."

Motorola has also built several similar TETRA-based systems for rail projects in countries such as Singapore (mass rapid transit (MRT) system), Hong Kong, Korea and the UK.

Other sectors where Motorola has implemented TETRA systems include public safety, land transport and public radio network operators.

In Malaysia, Motorola also played a key role in building the (non-TETRA) radio communications system for KLIA.
