KUALA LUMPUR--Malaysia will be the meeting point of Internet engineers and technologists from Asia Pacific early next year when the country plays host to the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference or APRICOT2001.

The annual event which focuses sharply on technical training for Internet operation, is specifically designed to help Internet operators in the region--such as Internet service providers (ISPs), public and corporate networks--expose their network engineers to the latest cutting-edge Internet technologies.

The local ISP business and Internet industry would benefit greatly from APRICOT as it would help nurture Internet engineers to meet the current challenges of rapid development of commercial Internet services such as e-commerce, said Wendy Liew, chairman of the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry Malaysia (PIKOM) which is one of the hosts of APRICOT2001.

"The ISP business here has gone through a second wave of liberalization which greatly enhances the demand for more engineers trained in Internet technologies. ARPICOT2001 will also help Malaysian Internet businesses build a stronger network with their counterparts in Asia and North America," she said.

APRICOT2001--co-hosted by PIKOM and the Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia--is scheduled to be held here from February 26 to March 2 next year.

It is organized by a committee comprising Internet engineers and business community volunteers from the Asia Pacific region. Primary supporters of APRICOT are the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) and Asia Pacific Internet Association (APIA). It has also gained high recognition from the global Internet community, such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The first APRICOT was held in Singapore in 1996 and has since then been held in Hong Kong, the Philippines as well as South Korea.

The summit traditionally comprises a two-day tutorial, three-day conference, Birds of a Feather meetings, AP* (APStar) meetings and social activities. Some of the topics presented in the past include Policy and Internet Security, Encryption, Firewall, Spamming, Domain Name System, Internet Regulation & Policy, Internet Protocol, ATM, Switches & Routers, Satellite & Wireless Technologies for the Internet, Virtual Private Networks and Extranets, VOIP, ISDN, xDSL and Broadband Internet.

Around 600 delegates, both local and international, are expected to attend APRICOT2001. International delegates include those from the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, India and Thailand.
