MALACCA--Infineon Technologies Malaysia will spend by year's end RM1 billion on its second plant in the state of Malacca, a 5,400 square meter semiconductor manufacturing facility located in Krubong Industrial Park.

The investment will go towards purchase of new equipment, upgrade of facilities and the hiring of new workers. The company plans to hire 1,000 workers for the new plant by August, the Business Times reported, quoting Infineon Technologies vice president, managing director and country manager Wil Fluit.

Infineon Technologies' first plant in the state is located in the Batu Berendam Free Trade Zone where there are 5,000-plus employees. Both plants have a production capacity of up to 800 million units of semiconductors a month. Infineon Technologies has another plant in Malaysia under Osram Opto Semiconductor (M) Sdn Bhd, based in Penang.

Fluit, according to the report, said the company aims to notch RM3.5 billion in revenue this year and had achieved its targeted revenue of RM3 billion last year. It is targeting RM5 billion in 2002.

Previously known as Siemens Components (Advanced Technology) Sdn Bhd, Infineon Technologies is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Munich, Germany-based Siemens AG which was ranked the eighth largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world last year.
