TAIPEI--Via Technologies Inc, the second-largest chipset maker, reported that profit more than doubled in the first quarter as it expanded sales at the expense of Intel Corp, its biggest rival.

Net income for three months ended March 31 rose to 2.3 billion, or NT$4.01 a share, from NT$939.7 million, or NT$1.67 per share, last year.

The company bucked slow demand in the personal computer business by more than doubling its market share for chipsets, which manage the flow of data between a computer's processor and other components such as memory chips and the display. Still, business will probably slow in the second quarter, Via said.

"The second quarter doesn't look like it will be as good as the first quarter," said Charlton Chen, Via's manager of investor relations.

Sales of computer products usually slow during the second quarter and increase during the second half of the year as demand increases on back-to-school sales and holiday demand.

For 2000, the company posted profit of NT$6.5 billion, rising from NT$1.98 billion a year earlier. Per-share earnings rose to NT$11.34 from NT4.03.
