Novell plans to begin shipping in February its Open Enterprise Server, which combines open source and commercial networking platforms. The product's closed beta testing will last through November and then open beta testing will begin, the software maker said Friday. The product will include Novell's SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and NetWare operating systems.

The company plans to coordinate the release of Open Enterprise Server with the availability of the first service pack for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9. Open Enterprise Server "represents the successful result of an ambitious effort to meld traditional commercial software with open source, and it will deliver the best of both worlds to customers," David Patrick, a Novell vice president, said in a statement.
