In opening the center, Marlborough, Mass.-based 3Com joins networking companies such as Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks, which already have facilities in India. 3Com had announced plans for the center, which is in Hyderabad, in April. It officially opened Thursday, the company said.
3Com set up the center with help from Mars Telecom, an Indian start-up. The gear maker has already recruited 35 engineers to work there but intends to increase the head count to 80 during the next 12 months.
In addition to VoIP, the center's staff will work on software products for use with 3Com's wireless, switching and network management gear.
The Hyderabad center is not 3Com's first foray into offshoring. Last year, the company set up a new product design house in Taiwan to manage the design and manufacturing of its low-price, high-volume products.
