IBM unveils dual-core PowerPC chips

IBM has lifted the covers off its new dual-core PowerPC microprocessor targeted at entry-level servers.

The 64-bit PowerPC 970MP boasts speeds ranging between 1.4GHz and 2.5 GHz, Big Blue announced Thursday at a forum in Tokyo.

According to a company statement, each of the two cores will have its own dedicated 1MB L2 cache. To ensure power saving, one of the cores can be powered down when it is not needed.

IBM also announced that it will be adding new extensions to its PowerPC 970FX chip. Targeted at companies which require low-cost, 64-bit processors, the latest addition will have a 512KB L2 cache and native 64-bit and 32-bit application compatibility.

This announcement comes a month after Apple's decision to shift its Mac line of products to Intel-based chips, hence ending its 12-year partnership with Big Blue.
