AMD-based Dell desktops go on sale

Dell desktops using AMD processors have gone on sale for the first time in the U.K.

Launched on Tuesday, non-Intel PCs on Dell's site included the Dimension C521, which uses either Sempron or Athlon 64 processors, and the higher-end Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor-sporting E521.

The world's largest PC maker, which had previously used only Intel chips, announced in August that it was to add AMD to its desktop line-up. The move followed Dell's first handshake with AMD in May, when Dell said it would be using AMD's Opteron chip in its multiprocessor servers by the end of 2006.

In August, Dell's Taiwanese operation also suggested the company was working on AMD-powered laptops to debut in October.
