Hewlett-Packard has decided against making a move to recall its laptops running on Sony's battery cell technology, bucking a recent trend that saw at least five major vendors launch worldwide programs to retrieve affected notebooks.
In a joint statement issued Tuesday, HP and Sony said both companies are "confident" the overheating issue is unlikely to affect HP battery packs that run on Sony's cell technology due to the way HP configures its personal computers.
Ted Clark, HP's senior vice president and general manager for notebook business, said in the statement: "We believe that we have the proper charging and circuit protections in place to prevent an overheating episode."
Noting that no reports of overheating have emerged to date, the statement added that HP deemed it "not necessary to join the global battery replacement program that Sony has announced to address end-user concern related to recent overheating incidents".
Other major PC manufacturers, however, have gone ahead with product recalls for affected systems including laptops from Toshiba, Lenovo, Panasonic, Apple Computer and Dell Computer.
In the statement released today, HP made no reference to the company's previous initiatives--in April this year and October 2005--to recall its notebooks due to battery-related overheating issues.
