Nvidia and its manufacturing partners have shown off the first products to use the chipmaker's Tegra chipset.

Twelve Tegra-based products went on display at Computex in Taiwan, according to Nvidia, which said on Tuesday that 20 such devices are "in the works".

Tegra is a low-power system-on-a-chip that incorporates an application processor, a graphics processing unit, a media processor and system memory. The chipset is intended for use in netbooks and mobile internet devices (MIDs) that are designed to be always-on.

A key feature of Tegra-based systems is their 1080p high-definition video playback. They are also described by Nvidia as having battery life comparable to that of mobile phones, due to the low-power design of the chipset.

The manufacturers showing off Tegra-based products at the Computex show in Taiwan include Compal, Inventec, Mobinnova, all of which are Taiwanese manufacturers of products that get rebranded by other companies. Other companies with products featuring the chipset are Asus's manufacturing spin-off, Pegatron, and Acer's manufacturing spin-off, Wistron.

A spokesperson for Nvidia told ZDNet Asia's sister site ZDNet UK that the company expects the products being shown off at Computex to ship soon.
