Yahoo's photo-sharing Web site Flickr, has added support for two Asian languages--Korean and traditional Chinese--and is planning to add more foreign languages to the list.
The company announced Tuesday that flickr.com has moved beyond the English language to cater to seven other major languages: French, German, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and traditional Chinese.
Stewart Butterfield, Flickr co-founder and director of product management at Yahoo, told ZDNet Asia in a phone interview that Korean and "Hong Kong-styled" traditional Chinese are the first two Asian languages that the Web site will support. After this week's launch, Flickr will evaluate and consider other Asian languages to add to the list.
According to Butterfield, simplified Chinese and Japanese will be important focus areas in the long-run.
"Flickr has established itself as the 'eyes of the world', with millions of people sharing photos of every imaginable aspect of life," he said. "Today, we're expanding our language support to make that dialog easier and to connect those who may not speak the same language, but who share the same passions."
Founded by Butterfield and his wife Caterina Fake in 2004, Flickr was acquired by Yahoo a year later and currently attracts 24 million visitors worldwide each month.
