Microsoft has bought Multimap, the U.K. online mapping services company, for an undisclosed sum.

Microsoft said the Multimap applications will complement its other online services such as Virtual Earth, Live Search, Windows Live and MSN in the near future.

Multimap provides personal mapping services on its Web site, multimap.com, along with integrated business services.

Jeff Kelisky, Multimap's CEO said the deal gives the company a "world of new opportunities" for using maps in new technologies and applications.

Sharon Baylay, general manager of the online services group at Microsoft, said the company is "thrilled to welcome Multimap" which will play a significant role in the future growth of the company's search business.

She added the acquisition enhances Microsoft's ability to provide mapping and location platform services.

Multimap will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft within its online services group and is part of Microsoft's effort to expand its online services for consumers and businesses.
