SINGAPORE--IBM has signed a memorandum of understanding with educational institution Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to develop a facility to create applications for businesses using Web 2.0 technologies.

The new Business Software Innovation Center will be housed in NYP's School of Information Technology, and is expected to train around 800 students over the next three years, according to a statement Tuesday from IBM.

The center aims to strengthen capabilities in Web 2.0 and mash-ups, make these technologies an integral part of the school curriculum as well as allow the industry to tap on its infrastructure and expertise in building Web 2.0 applications.

"Today, enterprises of all sizes are looking at Web 2.0 technologies to help revolutionize the way they conduct business, to help employees collaborate more effectively and enhance their clients outreach," said Teresa Lim, managing director of IBM Singapore. "Enterprises are able to realize the benefits of such innovative technologies as they are based on open standards, which enable transformation, economic growth and collaborative innovation."

IBM has previously partnered NYP on technologies such as Web services, radio frequency identification and service-oriented architecture.
