U.K.-based Preventon Technologies has secured its first Asian reseller for the company's firewall product, which debuted early this year.

The agreement was signed with Malaysia Internet Service Provider (ISP) Jaring, which will offer the Preventon Personal Firewall 2.2 on a subscription basis to its 500,000 subscribers in the country.

The product is designed for home users and small offices, providing protection from hackers and trojan horse programs over both broad- and narrowband Internet connections.

To use the service, home dial-up subscribers have to pay Jaring a monthly fee of RM3.99 (US$1.05), while those without a Jaring account and corporate customers pay RM4.99 (US$1.31), said Preventon in a statement.

Jaring has purchased 50,000 monthly software keys from Preventon, and will resell the firewall software to other ISPs in the country. The total number of Net users in Malaysia stands at about 2 million.

Preventon competes with well-known offerings such as Symantec's worm detector and remover Norton Antivirus; ZoneLabs' personal firewall program Zone Alarm; and Network Associates' McAfee brand of personal firewall and anti-virus offerings.

The UK firm claims it uses a patent-pending interface that enables users to take the guesswork out of configuring their personal firewall to maximize security--a feature that sets the company apart from its rivals. However, analysts were unconvinced that the company would make great inroads in the enterprise space, where established players have a strong mindshare.

Preventon's other ISP partners are Brightview in the U.K. and BRDNet in Denmark.
